ABOUT DURHAM COACHING
When doing everything “right” still wasn’t enough
Motherhood can be beautiful—but when you’re overwhelmed, exhausted, and stuck in survival mode, it can also feel impossible.
Before I Found My Way
As a mom with a chronic condition raising high‑needs children, I spent years chasing the ‘right’ plan—medical treatments, parenting strategies, self‑help routines. I kept hoping one of them would finally help me become the mother I wanted to be. For my chronic condition, I followed every detailed instruction my practitioners gave me, believing that focusing on the physical symptoms was the only path to enjoying life again. For my children, I turned to parenting experts, convinced they held the key to finally getting it “right” as a mom.
But doing everything “right” didn’t cure my condition, fix my relationships, or ease the guilt, anxiety, and constant feeling of falling short.
Instead, I spent my time imagining how life would be without my health challenges, wishing I were a different, better mom, and wondering, “Why me?”
Raising high‑needs children was already unpredictable. Layering my own health challenges on top made life feel uncertain, stressful, and overwhelming. There were mornings I could hardly get out of bed, completely drained before the day even started, wondering how I’d make it through, never mind tomorrow.
Building Peace From Within
My life didn’t change overnight. My kids still had big needs. My body still needed care. But I began to realize that no medical plan or parenting strategy could help me if I remained in constant fear, under pressure from my own perfectionism, while trying to control the uncontrollable.
The real turning point came when I started working on my inner world—my thoughts, emotions, and nervous system—alongside my physical health.
Instead of chasing the next protocol, I returned to the basics: consistent sleep, nourishing food, and gentle movement. I paired these with mental fitness tools that helped me manage stress, catch the anxious ‘what ifs,’ quiet my inner critic, and loosen my grip on trying to control everything. I also began to reconnect with neglected relationships and hobbies that truly brought me joy.
Slowly, I felt small shifts: a bit more energy, a little more patience, moments of genuine joy with my kids—even on hard days. I wasn’t suddenly ‘fixed,’ but I was no longer drowning.
For the first time, I could feel a path toward becoming whole again, even while life was still hard.
